How I feel

The way he makes me feel,
It’s hard to really say
It’s like walking outside,
On a clear sunny day
I feel at peace,
And my mind is free
It’s as if I was once blind,
But now I can see
He has the most genuine soul,
The prettiest blue eyes
Every time I look at him,
I’m on the highest of highs
He’s somehow familiar,
But new in a sense
It’s like a wave crashing into me,
The feeling, so intense
He’s something I didn’t expect,
Something I’m glad happened
My heart now is full,
No longer blackened
I’m grateful of this gift,
The happiness he brings
It’s like the flowers that bloom,
So pretty in spring
His sweet smile is my favorite,
My favorite of them all
I no longer feel numb,
He broke down that wall
My once wounded mind,
It’s starting to heal
I guess you could say,
That’s the way he makes me feel

GRATITUDE – a choice, a practice, an attitude

“In order to achieve contentment, one should cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously.”  This was said by Ralph Waldo Emerson – and it couldn’t be more true.

Stop for a moment and think about something that makes you happy, something that comforts you. Now imagine it gets taken away from you. Scary isn’t it? I like to stop and think about things that I love and can’t live without. It just takes a moment of awareness to feel the good that it brings. We should make it a habit to do this. The results are amazing.

Listed below, are five things that I am grateful for -the list could go on, but here’s just a few that came to mind…

F I V E T H I N G S I’ M G R A T E F U L F O R:

BOOKS – I don’t know what I would do without my books. They’re the greatest escape. My self-help books are my favorite because they have helped me tremendously. From love and relationships – to mental health. When you don’t want to talk to a therapist, or you don’t have the money, books are a great alternative. And the best part is you can go at your own pace.

MEMORIES – It’s amazing how much we can store in our minds. The fact that we can carry these experiences in our minds and then play them over and over. Of course there are memories we want to block out, but we actually benefit from those memories because we learn from them.

ANIMALS – What would we do without our pets…They’re the one thing you can count on to comfort you when you need it. It’s been proven that pet ownership is beneficial to your overall health, physically and mentally. They can improve your socialization skills and even decrease the risk of heart attack.

CELL PHONES – Can you imagine not having a cell phone?  When we’re stuck somewhere and bored out of our minds, they help pass the time. The fact that we can communicate with family and friends anytime, anywhere. And how many times have they come to the rescue? I couldn’t be more grateful for these little devices. Thank you, Martin Cooper.

HARD TIMES – Yep, I said it. If it weren’t for those difficult times, how would we know happiness? Hard times can enlighten us. They teach us and make us stronger. No matter how long it takes, you have to have faith that you’ll get through those times. Remember, lessons turn into blessings. I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.

Too often people forget that there’s always someone who has it worse. The fact that you can read this now is just another reason to be grateful.

To sum it up, practicing gratitude makes us nicer and  more appreciative. It also makes us more social, which in turn allows us to make more friends and deepen our current relationships.

Depression. It’s more than just being sad – Mental Health Awareness

Depression. It’s more than just being sad. It’s an ongoing cycle of intense sadness, a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy. You feel as though you may never escape it because you don’t know how. It’s a serious mood disorder that should be recognized.

Everyone has experienced some level of this kind of sadness. And most of us recover after some time. And if not recover, we learn to manage it with treatment. Maybe we go to a therapist, maybe we got some medication, or maybe the thing that triggered the sadness has finally simmered down.

But then there are those who get to the point of no return. To the point of hurting themselves and others. Sometimes accidental, sometimes intentional. Whatever the case, it’s a cry for help, and that includes abuse of drugs and alcohol. If these things are not given attention, it could end badly.

Sadly, I’ve seen this happen and that’s why we need to become aware. Because if we become aware, we just might be able to stop it. The people you least expect could be suffering and you don’t even know it. That happy face could very well be a mask.

A lot of the time people with depression say they don’t want to talk, but deep down they do want to get it all out, so give them the opportunity. Communication is so important. We all handle stress differently. You never know what people are capable of.

I wrote this article because I want to spread awareness. You’re not alone. I’ve been there and I’ve learned that things are never as bad as we think they are. We have to open up, accept who we are, and remember that we always have a choice.

I found a chart listing the symptoms of depression and anxiety. As you can see, they go hand in hand.

It’s oil-free, provides amazing coverage, and gives skin an overall smooth and even appearance. If you need full-coverage foundation, this is a great one. $39

Clinique even better foundation, SPF 15 Fragrance free

I absolutely love this one too. I have both Tarte and Clinique foundation actually, and switch between the two. This one provides moderate coverage and evens skin tone. It’s oil-free and fragrance free. $28

Maybelline Instant Age-Rewind Erase Dark Circle Treatment Concealer

Definitely my favorite under-eye concealer, and it’s affordable! This stuff visibly diminishes the appearance of puffiness and erases the appearance of dark circles and fine lines. Amazing coverage. $6.79 at Amazon right now.

 

Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder – 29g/1oz

Setting powder is a must for completing your make up. It visibly makes a difference and makes your make up last longer. This one’s a little pricey but it works great. $38

1. Why do you blog and what is the crux of your blog?
Blogging for me is an outlet to express myself. It feels good to write things that others can relate to, and possibly help.

2. What is your idea of the ‘perfect’ life? Are you living it? My idea of the perfect life is to have the ability to be happy as much as possible, and to be content with life and all the choices I’ve made. I think I’m doing pretty good so far.

3. What would your alter ego be?
My alter ego would be the “Chameleon” because of my ability to adapt to both environment and circumstances.

4. What is your pick-me-up for those times when feel grumpy?
Well…A glass of wine is always nice…add some popcorn and a movie. If we’re talking morning, just give me my coffee.

5. Who is the one person in your life who keeps you grounded?
My sister, Amy. I always trust her opinions.

6. Who is your favorite travel partner and why? My friend Dareth and I took a week long trip to NYC that I’ll never forget. We slept in the car one night…and met a strangers pet pig. She’s a carefree spirit and I love it.

7. Five books/films you derive inspiration from.
I’m going to list five of my favorite books, all of which are self-help; The Secret, The Mastery of Love, The Four Agreements, The Fifth Agreement, and No More Dreaded Monday’s.

8. Do you have a fitness regime? If yes, how do you keep fit? Not really, I just eat healthy…Portion control is key…And lots of water!

9. Which is the most difficult situation you have been caught in? How did you handle it? The most difficult situation I had experienced was the first time I ever broke up with someone. I did not handle it well, but I knew it was the right thing to do.

10. The most adventurous activity you have indulged in. I would definitely have to say, the time I spent a week out in Arizona. I did a lot of fun things out there, but the coolest was when I stayed the night at the (haunted) “Jerome Grand Hotel”.

11. What is the most crucial lesson you have learned so far in life?
No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes.

Being Single is Underrated.

img_6826Single, solo, no husband, no kids…You get it. Well that’s me. And probably you because you’re reading this. Or maybe it’s not you at all. Whoever you are, you may still benefit.

I was never really in a rush to get married or have kids. I’m 29, and still single. Some may see that as a bad thing, but really I’m just focusing on me. Shouldn’t that be our number one priority?

I’ve been in love once. And I’ve found that it consumes your life. Your life basically revolves around that person. It’s such an exciting feeling, but then you come to find that you’re losing yourself. You start feeling dependent on that person and rely on them to make you happy. Being this way will only disappoint you.

Many people settle because they think they need to, or their parents want them to. We were raised to think this way. But I think it’s kind of sad that people think relationships are the be-all and end-all of personal happiness. It’s not. At least in my opinion.

My parents divorced when I was young. But they also married before 21. Did they marry too early? Or did they just simply not work out? I’m not too sure of that answer, but I know in this day and age it’s more socially acceptable to be single at my age, thankfully.

So many people stress out on finding someone to share their life with in fear that they will run out of time. They search and search for that person not realizing that they’re searching for someone to: a) fill a void they think they cannot fill, or b) because their biological clock is ticking, “Kids-kids!” Either way, if those are your reasons, then you’re settling for the wrong one’s and will more than likely be disappointed.

I believe that if you take the time to learn about yourself, figure out what inspires you, and see that your own love is enough, you will be content with being alone, and you won’t mind waiting for that one person who compliments your life. Learning to be this way allows you to find a higher quality person. In other words, you gain a longer, stronger lasting love.

I believe there’s someone out there for everyone. Embrace every moment of your single life. There is no rush.
